Security Competition

Among other things, this year we'll be introducing a Security Competition.

There's a maximum of 10 teams, with a maximum of 4 elements each (all of which must be Codebits participants).

Let's skip the team selection for a bit and talk about the competition itself.

Each of the selected teams will be assigned a virtual machine in a separate network; this machine has a set of services.

During the next 60 minutes each team will have to harden its virtual machine while making sure this set of services keep running as stipulated on the rules (to be distributed in the beginning of the competition).

After a short delay for snapshot creation, all teams will be handed the IP addresses of all the other machines.

During the following 60 minutes, each of these teams will try to hack into them; each of the services will have a flag (more details soon) that will prove the breaching. The services must keep on running.

As we speak, a team is preparing the virtual machines and all the other details for this experience.

Team selection will be performed soon. Stay tuned.

what happens if a tester crashes another teams service during the second round rendering it unhackable? they'll have to root the machine to restart it?
what if it's own team who induced the crash? :P

just saying the rules might need some tuning before the event ;)

Don't worry, we are taking that into account in the rules and we are preventing some of the things physically. Stay tunned :)
